Coach Richard Walker
There has always been a strong bond between the community and sports, and an important role played by coaches in teaching, mentoring, and guiding the young people of this community. Ask anyone who played anything, “COACH” is more than a nickname or a title, it’s a term of endearment and respect.
Coach Walker is continuing that legacy, and he has spent a lifetime in service to the children and families of the City of Hollywood.
A Life Rooted in Community Service
During a 30-year career with the City of Hollywood, Mr. Walker directed programs at the Washington Park Community Center, and subsequently at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. Throughout his tenure, providing a patient and steady presence, and serving as a role model in the lives of young people across Hollywood.
In addition to his work in our community centers, in 1992 he Founded the Hollywood Eagles Youth Development Program, over the years guiding many of our community’s at-risk youth to attendance at universities across the country.
Mr. Walker has also left his mark in our schools, coaching the South Broward High School Girls Basketball Team to 6 State Championships over his 20 year career.
He is a man of faith and ministry, serving at New Jerusalem Baptist Church.
He is a committed community activist and leader, a graduate of Leadership Hollywood in 2003, and served as the Director of the Liberia100 Celebration Parade and Fun Day, in honor of the neighborhood’s Centennial Anniversary.
